Lacson Alarmed over PNP Chief Admission of 'Data-Gathering' Activities

Alarming.

This was how Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson described on Tuesday the admission by Philippine National Police chief Guillermo Eleazar that there are "data-gathering" activities in several barangays nationwide.

Citing the latest information reaching him, Lacson - who headed the PNP from 1999 to 2001 - also said such activities are still ongoing, amid the PNP's initial denial.

"The Chief PNP’s admission that such data-gathering activities are going on (and still going on, as per latest information received) is alarming. Being their former chief, I cannot allow the PNP to engage in partisan politics and be 'bastardized', worse - using public funds," Lacson said on his Twitter account.

Earlier, Lacson cited reports indicating the PNP was involved in "census" activities using the funds of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC). The PNP denied authorizing such activities.

Also, Lacson maintained that Police Maj. Gen. Rodel Sermonia, the director for the PNP's Police Community Relations unit, has some explaining to do on the matter.

In an interview on DZBB radio last Sunday, Lacson cited information reaching him indicating Sermonia was involved in the gathering of data including email addresses and phone numbers.

On Tuesday, Lacson noted Sermonia had already been "lambasted" by Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. for campaigning in the 2019 midterm elections using our embassies' resources.

"The same misguided PNP officer that SFA Locsin 'lambasted' for raising funds and campaigning in the 2019 midterm elections while  using the resources of several of  our country’s embassies around the globe. He has since been promoted to his present rank," Lacson tweeted.

On Tuesday, Eleazar indicated in an interview on ANC that data-gathering activities were being done supposedly by certain groups, adding that if the PNP is indeed involved, "it has to be stopped."

Eleazar also noted the Police Community Relations (PCR) unit which Sermonia heads is "encouraging" force multipliers for advocacy groups. He added he had cautioned Sermonia about this activity - that forcing people to join is not allowed.

I request all you friends of mine, together with your own friends and relatives, to support the LACSON-SOTTO tandem.

Sen. Ping has been consistently on the watch over the way our national budget is allocated and spent. He has not gotten his “pork” during all the time that he was senator. He is the best person to enforce an anti-corruption drive in government. He was able to discipline the PNP, reducing police waistline, eliminating “kotong cops” and devolved PNP funds down to the remotest detachment.

He knows the problems and figures besetting our country and the next president. Knowing the problem is already half the solution.

Sen. Tito proves to be an effective senate president who presides by consensus building. His approach to the drug problem is not merely enforcement but also includes prevention and rehabilitation.

The two will prove to be the leaders we want. Truly pro-Filipino!

On the Revelation by VP Robredo on My Suggested 'Sure Unification Formula'

It was a selfless move on my part to offer the unification formula to Vice President Leni Robredo since she was after a united opposition/front in 2022. After all, it was her objective for liaising with different forces or candidates including Mayor Isko Moreno, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Sen. Richard Gordon, among others.

It goes without saying, I respect her decision to resist my suggestion and whatever reasons she has for declining. I admit that while there could be some complications attendant to my suggestion, nevertheless, it was a sincere and selfless offer in support of her equally sincere efforts to have one common candidate against whoever will be the administration’s bet.

Included in my suggestion was to have Senate President Vicente C. Sotto III as our common VP candidate, if only to emphasize that I have no intention of abandoning my partner. In fact, it was in his presence that I made the offer.

At that meeting, I couldn’t think of another sure unification formula. Not filing in October in favor of one common candidate as VP Leni would want it will not happen, considering that the campaign won’t even start until  February or four months later.

That's who I am. Challenge me and I will deal with it with boldness, honesty, sincerity and sensibility. I take serious matters with utmost seriousness. Concepts are easy to deal with. How to concretize and implement is the hardest part.
